How is Rested time calculated?

The game computes it as 480 + 60 * (comfortLevel - 1) seconds, where comfort level is 1 for standing there, plus 1 if you are sheltered by a roof and walls, plus the best piece of every comfort group within 10 metres of you. That is the formula in SE_Rested in the game assembly, and this calculator runs exactly that, so the minutes it shows are the minutes you get in game.

What is the max comfort level in Valheim 1.0?

The Valheim 1.0.7 data tops out at comfort 24, which is 31:00 of Rested. It takes 1 for being there, 1 for shelter, the best piece of every one of the 11 comfort groups, and the standalone extras that count on their own: Dragon Bed (+2), Hearth (+2), Antler Throne (+3), Round Table (+2), Bearskin Rug (+2), Blue Jute Curtain (+2), Lava Lantern (+2), Item Stand (+1), Small Green Pot (+1), Mistletoe (+1), Hot Tub (+2), Yule Tree (+1), Maypole (+1). The Max comfort preset in the calculator places all of it and lists every material you need.

Why don't two chairs stack?

Every comfort piece belongs to a group (bed, chair, table, fire, rug, banner, lantern and so on) and only the highest piece in each group counts. Two Raven Thrones give the same +3 as one, and a Stool next to a Wood Chair is worth +2 for the chair and nothing for the stool. The exception is the game's own "None" group, which is not deduplicated: Yule Tree and Maypole each add their own point on top of everything else.

Does a hot tub count toward comfort?

Yes. The Hot Tub is a Leisure piece worth +2 comfort, and the Barber Station shares that group at +1, so a base with both only counts the tub. It also needs to be within 10 metres of where you stand for the buff to pick it up, so keep it close to where you sleep rather than out on a deck.

Do seasonal items like the Yule Tree count?

They do, whenever the game lets you build them. The 5 garlands (Flower Garland, Fey Lights, Mistletoe and the Yule pieces) share one group worth +1, the Yule Tree is a standalone +1 that stacks with a Maypole, and the Jack-o-turnip (+2) and Snow Lantern (+2) count as lanterns. Take them down and the comfort goes with them, so the calculator lists them so you can see what you would lose.

How accurate is this?

The comfort value and group of every piece come from the game's own piece definitions, dumped from a Valheim 1.0.7 dedicated server rather than copied from a wiki. The Rested formula is 480 + 60 * (comfortLevel - 1) seconds, with the comfort level built as 1 for standing there, 1 for being sheltered, the best piece of each comfort group within 10 metres, and every piece in the game's "None" group counted separately.

Meads and feasts also carry a comfort value in the game files (a placeholder of +1 in the chair group) because they can be set out on a table. That never beats a real chair and would list drinks as furniture, so they are left out of the table and the calculator. At comfort 1 with nothing around you the buff lasts 8:00; the maximum the data allows is comfort 24, or 31:00.

Comfort decides how long the Rested buff lasts after you settle in near your furniture. The timer is 8 minutes at comfort 1 and grows by 60 seconds for every level above that, so a comfort 24 room keeps you Rested for 31:00.
