Upkeep is the resource cost of keeping a base from decaying. Every building block a Tool Cupboard protects drains a little of its build material each day, paid out of whatever you've stored in the cupboard. Stop paying and the blocks start losing health until they collapse.

On a small base each block costs about a tenth of its build cost per day: a stone wall or foundation is 30 stone a day, a stone floor or roof is 15. So a simple 2x2 stone shell runs a few hundred stone a day. Larger bases pay a higher rate per block (see below), and a big compound can run several thousand. Rust scales upkeep by the number of building blocks the Tool Cupboard protects. The first 15 blocks are billed at 10% of build cost per day, and each block beyond that is charged a higher rate (15%, then 20%, topping out at about 33% past 125 blocks). So the effective rate climbs from a tenth toward a third as you build bigger, which is why sprawling compounds cost so much to hold. By raw material, stone has the best upkeep-to-durability ratio for most bases. Wood is cheaper still but burns to fire and is weak. Sheet metal costs metal fragments, which farm slower than stone, and armored is brutal because it's paid in high quality metal, so most players only armor the core and TC room.

Build smaller and smarter: fewer building blocks means less upkeep, so avoid unnecessary walls and over-armoring. Honeycomb with cheaper grades, keep the expensive HQM for the core, and don't leave twig or half-built extensions attached.
