RustServer Settings

Build a complete server.cfg and startup script without guessing convar names. Pick a preset, tune every setting with explanations, get warned about the combos that empty servers, and copy it into your panel.

server.hostname "My Rust Server"

3 things worth checking

  • WebRCON is on with no rcon.password. Anyone who finds the port owns your server. Set a long password.
  • No wipe cadence tag (weekly, biweekly, monthly). Players filter by it, add one.
  • No region tag. Region is the most used browser filter.

Server Identity

What players see in the server browser

Shown in the browser. Lead with what matters: wipe cadence, region, rates.

0 characters

Line breaks are converted to \n for you. Discord link, wipe day, rules.

server.tags ""

Only these tags are filterable in the server browser. Pick a wipe cadence and a region at minimum.

Exactly 512 x 256, direct link to a .png or .jpg. Checked live below.

Square logo shown next to the name in newer clients.

The "Visit website" button. Discord invites work here.

Shown once when a player connects.

Network & Admin

Ports, RCON, Rust+ and anti-cheat

On a Physgun server the panel sets identity, IPs and ports for you. These matter when you self-host.

Folder name for saves and cfg. No spaces.

UDP. Default 28015, must be open to the internet.

UDP. Steam server queries. Keep it different from the game port.

TCP. Do not expose it beyond your admin tools.

Required for RCON tools, the panel console and most Discord bots.

WebSocket RCON. Required by RustAdmin, BattleMetrics and the Facepunch web console.

TCP. Rust+ companion app pairing. Set to -1 in the startup line to disable.

Turning EAC off delists you from the community list. Leave on.

World & Wipe

Map, size, seed and player cap

Custom maps use server.levelurl instead. Procedural is what everyone plays.

0 rolls a new random map every wipe. Set a number to keep a map you like. Changing it needs a map wipe.

3000 to 3500 for up to 50 players, 4000 to 4500 for 100+. Bigger maps cost RAM and spread players thin.

Server browser shows this cap. Size RAM and CPU to it, not the other way round.

Softcore: half your loot back on death. Hardcore: no map, no team UI, no bag respawn.

Players cannot damage each other. Pair it with the pve tag.

600 is the default. Below 300 causes visible stutter on big maps.

Facepunch ships 30 and tunes the game around it. Raising it costs CPU for no real gain.

Decay & Upkeep

How fast abandoned bases disappear

1 is normal. 0 disables decay entirely, which lets dead bases pile up and eats performance by mid-wipe.

Tool cupboard upkeep costs. Off means bases never decay while a TC exists.

1440 = pay for 24 hours at a time.

How fast things decay inside a paid-up TC zone. 0.1 default.

Lower keeps entity counts down on busy servers.

Rates & Gathering

Gather, stacks, crafting and spawns

Gather and stack multipliers are not vanilla convars. They generate a plugin command block below instead of server.cfg lines.

Needs Gather Manager (uMod) or Carbon. 2x to 5x is the sweet spot for modded pop.

Needs Stack Size Controller (uMod) or Carbon Stack Manager.

Common on 10x and creative servers.

Resource and animal respawn speed. Vanilla convar.

How many nodes and animals exist at once. Above 2 hurts performance.

Events

Heli, Bradley, Cargo and seasonal

Random patrol heli spawns.

Performance & Misc

FPS cap, chat, idle kick

256 default. Lower to 60 to 100 on shared hardware to leave headroom.

Leave on.

Off = proximity chat only.

Hides names from the Steam server info. Helps against targeted DDoS and stream sniping.

0 disables. Keep it on when your server fills up.

Off lets players build floating bases. Creative servers only.

Defaults match RustDedicated as shipped by Facepunch. Convars you import that we don't list are preserved untouched in the output.

server//cfg/server.cfg, where is your server.identity. The folder is created on first boot. Convars in server.cfg are applied after startup, so anything the server needs before the world loads (identity, ports, level, seed, world size, max players) belongs on the startup line instead. This generator splits them for you. On a Physgun server the panel already sets identity and ports, paste the server.cfg block into the config editor and restart.
