Rust October 2026 Update: Livestock Patch Notes for Servers
The Rust October 2026 update (Livestock) launched October 1 with cows, sheep, breeding, the Biofuel Generator, Heavy Fuse loot rooms, new convars and a forced wipe. Here's what server owners need to know.
The Rust October 2026 update is the Livestock Update. It went live on Thursday, October 1, 2026 at 2pm ET (7pm BST) with a forced wipe on every server. It adds farmable cows and sheep with breeding and genetics, a Biofuel Generator, Heavy Fuse loot rooms at 13 monuments, a repairable Air Wolf helipad, stackable sandbags, and the new Rust Render Pipeline.
For server owners, the important parts are the new convars, the population-scaled fuse decay, and a few progression changes you may want to tune. This guide covers all of it, from gameplay to config to wipe-day prep. If you’d rather skip the manual update dance, Physgun’s Rust server hosting handles wipes and plugin updates from the panel.
Rust October 2026 Update At A Glance
Here’s the whole patch in one table, sorted by how much it touches your server.

Livestock, Breeding And Genetics
Livestock is the headline feature. Cows, bulls, calves, sheep and lambs spawn mostly in grassland biomes. Players tame them, then lead them home on a lead.
The lead snaps if you sprint or the animal gets snagged. You can move several animals at once, and cows fit on a double flatbed vehicle module.
Keeping Animals Alive
Animals need food, water and decent living conditions. They also graze on grass by themselves.
- Animal Fence and Animal Gate: These snap together like external walls, so pens build fast.
- Hitch & Trough: The improved trough handles both food and water.
- Crowding: 5 animals in an area counts as crowded, and 9 or more is severely packed. Keep pens spread out.
- Taming: Wild animals need familiarity built up over time. That familiarity decays until a full bond forms.
Breeding And Inbreeding
Calves and lambs inherit genetics from both parents and grow up quickly. Genetics show in the animal’s UI and affect production and sale value.
Pairing related animals over and over gives bad results. Wild and purchased animals also take a sale-value penalty, while bred animals sell at full value. That pushes ranchers toward real breeding programs instead of flipping wild catches.
Milk, Wool And New Recipes
- Milk: Female cows give 2 Milk at a time, stacking up to 10. Refrigerate it for 4 hours and it separates into Skimmed Milk and Cream.
- Wool: Shear sheep with a knife. Hitting an already-sheared patch hurts the animal, so aim carefully.
- Slaughter: Animals drop dung, meat, bones and leather.
- New food: Beef, Mutton, Shepherd’s Pie, Beef Pie, plus Creamy and Milky tea. Milk extends tea duration and Cream boosts potency.
The Ranch Livestock Vendor
The new vendor lives at The Ranch. It sells young animals and buys grown ones.
| Purchase | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Calf | 300 Scrap | Random sex and genetics |
| Lamb | 150 Scrap | Random sex and genetics |
When you sell, the vendor makes up to 3 offers based on genetics. You can reject twice. Reject all three and that animal is refused for 15 minutes.
Top-quality stock can pull Pythons, HQM, Red Keycards, rifle and SMG bodies, Ladder Hatches, high-tier doors and Scrap. That’s a real progression path, so watch it on low-pop or boosted servers. Wool sells the same way, with up to 400 Wool per trade.
- Running a 2x or 5x server? Your gather multipliers may make livestock rewards arrive much faster than Facepunch intended. Test a ranch run before your players do.
Biofuel Generator
The Biofuel Generator turns food into Low Grade Fuel. It’s a Tier 1 blueprint on the right side of the tech tree for 105 Scrap.
- Power draw: 5 power to run.
- Capacity: Up to 500 Low Grade Fuel.
- Stirring: One stir runs it for 30 minutes. Adding food pauses it until someone stirs again.
- Needs Stirring output: A 1-power signal you can wire to a light or alarm.
- Offline: It keeps producing while the owner is offline.
Fresh and spoiled food both work. Facepunch tuned yields so potatoes and fish are less efficient than other foods. Plan your scrap path with the Tech Tree Calculator, and check food craft costs in the Rust item database.
Heavy Fuse Monument Loot Rooms
The Power Plant’s grid now feeds powered loot rooms across the map. Each room needs Heavy Fuses in the Power Plant, and harder monuments need more.
| Tier | Fuses | Monuments |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | Ferry Terminal, Harbor 1, Harbor 2, Junkyard |
| 2 | 4 | Airfield, Train Yard, Radtown, Water Treatment, Sewer Branch |
| 3 | 10 | Military Tunnels, Launch Site (2 rooms), Nuclear Missile Silo |
Rewards range from basic crates at Ferry Terminal to Military Crates at Junkyard, Train Yard, Launch Site and the Silo. Radiation and monument hazards still apply.
The small Heavy Fuse box at Power Plant moved outside, reachable through a broken window. That’s a quiet buff for small groups.
Fuse Decay Now Scales With Population
This one is aimed squarely at community servers. With 10 or fewer players online, Heavy Fuses last four times longer. The bonus tapers back to normal lifespan at 100+ players.
You can tune it with three new convars:
powergrid.fusedecaylowpop
powergrid.fusedecayhighpop
powergrid.fusedecaylowpopscaleCheck the current value of each in your console before changing anything, then write your chosen values into server.cfg so they survive restarts. With True Console & SSH Access on the panel, you see output live from the container instead of waiting on a log file.
Air Wolf Helipad And Other Server-Side Changes
The Helipad Starts Broken
Every wipe, the Air Wolf helipad at Bandit Camp starts damaged. The vendor won’t sell air vehicles until players repair it.
Repairs take 30,000 wood, 10,000 metal fragments and 100 rope, applied with a hammer. Anyone can chip in. A new CCTV camera, AIRWOLF, watches the pad.
On a small server, that’s a lot of grind. Two new convars give you control:
vehicle.padrepairsrequired false
vehicle.setrepairablepads 1- vehicle.padrepairsrequired false reverts the change entirely.
- vehicle.setrepairablepads forces the pad state: 0 for broken, 1 for repaired.
Sandbag Barricade Overhaul
Sandbags are now stackable single pieces, about a third of the old height. Stack 4 pieces to get a firing window.
| Layers | Health |
|---|---|
| 1 | 150 |
| 2 | 200 |
| 3 | 250 |
| 4 | 300 |
Each one costs 50 stone and 5 cloth, blueprint is Tier 1 for 15 Scrap, and they stack 20 in inventory. They go on foundations, rocks, terrain, player boats and ground around monuments, but can’t be picked up once placed. Want to know what it takes to blow through a stack? The Raid Calculator is the quick way to plan it.
Smaller Gameplay Tweaks Worth Knowing
- Oil Rig: Crude pumping now takes 15 minutes to start producing.
- Water Wheels: 4 to 5x more melee protection.
- Explosives: C4, grenades and satchels get client-side prediction, so throws feel better at higher ping.
- Attack Helicopter: Armor plates now fall off in random order.
- Horses: Produce far less dung, and livestock are more efficient fertilizer sources.
- Ladder Hatches: New look and Workshop skin support, with no gameplay changes.
- Smart Alarms: Can be placed on top of other deployables.
- Painting:
paint.outlineinvertrestores the old brush outline.
Performance, Memory And The Render Pipeline
This patch is friendlier to hardware than most. Facepunch reports procedural map generation about 18% faster, saving roughly 67 seconds on a 4,000-size test map. Over 15,000 renderers were cut from procedural generation too.
Client memory dropped as well. Hand mesh cleanup saves about 100MB, store asset changes save 250MB at boot, and LOD texture work saves 100 to 300MB. Multithreaded animation IK shaved around 1ms of frame time with 100 players in view.
The Rust Render Pipeline is client-side. Players can flip back to the old pipeline in the Experimental tab for the first month. If players report odd visuals, that toggle is your first suggestion.
After the wipe, run serverinfo in console to check server FPS and entity count. Physgun’s Server Metrics graphs the same numbers live, alongside CPU, memory and per-plugin hook times in milliseconds. That’s the fastest way to spot a plugin that broke on the new build. The F8 overlay also gained detailed frame-timing info on the client side.
- New entities mean more server load over a wipe. If you expect big ranches, size your plan with the RAM Calculator.
Wipe-Day Checklist For The Livestock Update
This was a forced wipe, so every server needed the new build and a fresh map. Here’s the order we’d follow.
- Back up first. Snapshot your configs, data folder and plugins. Automated Backups on the panel restores to any snapshot in seconds.
- Update the server to the October 1 build.
- Update Oxide or Carbon. Modding frameworks need a fresh build after every forced update.
- Update your plugins. The Rust Plugin Installer pulls from uMod.org and Codefling and keeps plugins current automatically.
- Decide on blueprints. Map wipe is mandatory, blueprint wipe is your call.
- Set your new convars. Fuse decay and helipad repairs are the two worth reviewing.
- Start the server and watch it. Check the console for plugin compile errors, then watch FPS for the first hour.
The Automatic Rust Wiper handles map and blueprint wipes on a recurring schedule, so next month’s force wipe runs itself. Want next month’s date in your timezone? The Wipe Schedule tool counts down to it. If wiping, updating and patching plugins every first Thursday is eating your evening, hosting on Physgun turns most of this list into a few clicks.
Making The Most Of The October 2026 Update
The Livestock Update gives players a new long-term loop, from breeding stock to selling it for high-tier loot. For owners, the levers are clear: update frameworks and plugins first, then tune fuse decay and the helipad for your population, then watch performance as ranches grow. Low-pop and boosted servers get the most out of the new convars, so test them before players lock in their routes. If you want wipes, backups and plugin updates handled from one panel, Physgun’s Rust server hosting is built for exactly this, and we do have a little bias, so try it for yourself!
