Your whole Dragonwilds world, with every build and every bit of progress, lives in one save file on your server. A copy of that file next to the original, plus one on your own PC, means a bad update, a wrong setting or an uploaded world that replaces yours costs you nothing. Make one before game updates, before you upload a different world, and before you change settings that affect the world.
Before you start, your server needs to have created its world at least once. If it’s brand new, start it from the Physgun Gamepanel and let it finish loading, so the save file exists.
Find the save
Stop the server first. A running game writes to the save, and a copy made in the middle of that can be incomplete.
- On your server’s page, select Stop at the top.
- Select Yes, Stop Server and wait until the status next to your server’s name shows Offline.
- Select Files in the menu on the left.
- Open the RSDragonwilds folder.
- Open Saved.
- Open SaveGames.
Your world save is the .sav file named after your server’s World Name setting. On a new server that’s Physgun World.sav. The name matters: if you change World Name, the server starts a new world under the new name on its next start, and the old .sav stays in this folder.
Back up and download
- Select the … button at the end of your world’s
.savrow. - Choose Duplicate.
- In New name, type a name with “backup” in it, such as
Physgun World backup.sav. The copy is made in the same folder. - Select Duplicate. The backup now sits next to your save, with the same size.
- Open the … menu on your world’s
.savfile again. - Choose Download.
Check the downloaded file on your PC: its size should match the size shown in the file list. A freshly created world is about 62.6 KB, and it grows as you play. If yours is smaller than the one on the server, the download was cut off, so download it again before you rely on it.
The backup copy stays on the server and uses its disk space, so delete old copies you don’t need anymore. When you’re done, select Start to bring the server back up.
For a backup of the whole server rather than just the world, open Backups under Management in the left menu.
Copy the save by hand
The manual way works on any server with a file manager or file access, without the Duplicate option:
- Go to
RSDragonwilds/Saved/SaveGamesand stop the server. - Open the menu on your world’s
.savfile and choose Copy. - Open a row menu in the same folder and choose Paste. This makes a copy with “copy” in its name, such as
Physgun World copy.sav. - Choose Rename on the copy and change “copy” to “backup”, so it’s easy to tell apart later.
- Download the original with Download, or with an SFTP client connected to the server.
If you played the world in single-player first, that save is on your own PC, in:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\RSDragonwilds\Saved\SaveGamesRestore a backup
- Stop the server.
- Download or move everything in
SaveGamessomewhere safe, so you can go back if the restore fails. - Empty the
SaveGamesfolder. - Put back only the
.savyou want to load. Give it your World Name, for examplePhysgun World.sav. - Start the server, then join it and check that your world loads as you expect.
If it doesn’t work
- There’s no
.savfile in SaveGames: the server hasn’t created its world yet. Start it, let it finish loading, then stop it and look again. - The world reset after a restart: World Name no longer matches the save’s file name, so the server made a new world. Set World Name back to the file’s name (without
.sav), or rename the file to match.
