The New Minecraft Sift Dimension: What Server Owners Should Know
Everything confirmed about the new Minecraft Sift dimension: the 2027 release, the Dungeons II preview, mobs, biomes, open questions, and how to get your server ready.
The new Minecraft Sift dimension is the game’s fourth dimension. It joins the Overworld, the Nether and the End. Mojang revealed it at Minecraft Live on September 26, 2026, and it’s coming to Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027. You can explore a version of it first in Minecraft Dungeons II, which launches on September 29, 2026.
It’s the first new dimension since the End arrived in 2011, so it’s the biggest change to the world most servers will ever go through. Below, we cover what’s confirmed, what’s still a mystery, and how to prep your server so launch day is a party instead of a rollback. If you’re planning a fresh world for it, Physgun’s Minecraft server hosting gives you one-click version switching and one-click backup restores, which take a lot of the stress out of big updates.
What Is The Sift?
The Sift is a colorful dimension full of souls, built alongside the team behind Minecraft Dungeons II. Its look leans on red and orange stone, green vegetation, sculk, and a hazardous liquid called ichor. It’s nothing like the fiery Nether or the bleak End.
Mojang describes it as serene but dangerous. It isn’t evil, but it will still hurt you. In Dungeons II’s story, Illagers invade the Sift to harvest its resources and souls. Back in the Overworld, strange events start breaking the natural order and souls begin flying through the world.
Mojang’s own framing is that new dimensions expand the whole universe of the game. That’s why this one matters more than a normal biome drop.
Everything Confirmed About The Sift So Far
This table lists only what Mojang has actually announced. It leaves out the speculation you’ll see on YouTube.
| Detail | What’s confirmed |
|---|---|
| Arrives in Minecraft | 2027, Java and Bedrock Edition. No exact date or version number yet. |
| First playable | Minecraft Dungeons II, September 29, 2026 |
| Dungeons II platforms | Xbox Series X and S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PC and Steam |
| Look and feel | Red and orange stone, green plants, sculk, ichor, day and night ambience |
| Named areas | Meadows and the Carapace were named in Mojang’s reveal |
| Mobs | New companions and threats. The Minecraft Wiki lists the blub as a Sift mob headed to the main game |
| Special mechanic | Shifting tides inside the Sift can affect you and players around you |
| How you get there | Not announced for Java or Bedrock |
| Before it | The Frozen Caves game drop, with rare Ice Caves and the new Frozen Zombie |
The last row matters for planning. The Sift isn’t the next update, so you have at least one more drop to handle first.
What You’ll Find In The Sift (Based On Dungeons II)
Dungeons II is the best preview we have. Mojang hasn’t said how the main-game version will differ, though, so treat this as a strong hint, not a spec sheet.
- Regions: Echo Den, Lullaby Hills, Singer’s Meadow and the Carapace.
- Native mobs: Blub, Crested Sentinel, Echo Golem, Groobler Sentinel, Licker, Nester, Sculk Mage, Sculk Slasher, Seedling, Singer, Sprout and Trill.
- Bosses: the Harmonizer, the Monarch and the Sculk Monstrosity.
- Hazards: ichor pools and new dangerous block types that change how you explore.
- Getting in: in Dungeons II, you reach the Sift through dimensional rifts that tear open across the map.
Don’t expect a one-to-one port. Dungeons is an action game with fixed levels. Vanilla Minecraft needs infinite, generated terrain, survival resources and blocks that work with redstone. Some of these mobs and bosses will likely change or stay behind.
What We Still Don’t Know
Mojang is keeping most details quiet. These are the open questions that matter most to server owners:
- How you enter it. It could use a crafted portal like the Nether, a found portal like the End, or something new like rifts.
- Which version it ships in. Mojang hasn’t named a version number or month.
- Whether you can test it early. Big features usually appear in Java snapshots and Bedrock Preview first, but nothing is confirmed for the Sift yet.
- Whether old worlds can reach it. The Nether and End each generate as their own separate space. If the Sift follows that pattern, existing worlds may be fine, but that’s unconfirmed.
- Server toggles. There’s no word yet on a setting to disable it, the way
allow-netherworks for the Nether.
We’ll know more once it lands in testing builds. Until then, plan for the worst case, which is a fresh world.
The Sift Vs The Nether And The End
It helps to compare the Sift with the two dimensions every server already runs.
| The Nether | The End | The Sift | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Added | 2010 | 2011 | 2027 (planned) |
| Mood | Hostile, fiery | Bleak, final boss | Serene but dangerous |
| Access | Build an obsidian portal | Activate a stronghold End portal with Eyes of Ender | Not announced |
| Vanilla save folder | world/DIM-1 | world/DIM1 | Not announced |
| Paper/Spigot save folder | world_nether | world_the_end | Not announced |
| Server toggle | allow-nether in server.properties | allow-end in bukkit.yml (Bukkit-based servers) | Not announced |
That folder split matters. On Paper and Spigot, each dimension lives in its own world folder. Backup scripts and world-reset routines that only name the existing folders could miss a new one.
How The Sift Will Affect Your Minecraft Server
A new dimension touches more than gameplay. These are the spots where owners usually get caught out.
- Server software lag: Paper, Purpur, Fabric, Forge and NeoForge all need builds for the new version. Don’t update on day one unless you run vanilla.
- Plugin breakage: plugins that handle worlds, teleports, land claims, world borders or portals are the most likely to break. Check each one for an update before you switch.
- Crossplay: if Bedrock friends join through GeyserMC and Floodgate, those plugins have to support the new version too.
- Memory: with players spread across four dimensions, more chunks stay loaded at once. Use the Minecraft RAM Calculator to check your headroom. You can also add RAM from the panel later if the Sift pushes you over.
- Disk space: with a whole new dimension to explore, world files grow faster in the weeks after launch.
You don’t need console commands to watch for lag after the update. The panel’s Server Metrics graphs show CPU, memory and tick time live, so you’ll spot a lag spike from the Sift right away.
Getting Your Server Ready For The Sift Update
You can start now, even with the release a year out. To prepare:
- Take a full backup today. In the Physgun panel, Backups handles manual snapshots, and the Scheduler can run them automatically. Any backup restores in one click.
- Decide between a fresh world and your current map. A fresh seed gives everyone the same shot at the Sift. Keeping your map protects years of builds. Poll your players.
- Test on a copy, not your live world. When the Sift reaches snapshots or Preview, use the Jar Manager to switch a test server to the new version.
- Audit plugins and mods. List every jar and note how quickly its author usually updates. The Plugin Installer and 1-Click Mod Installers make swapping in updated versions quick.
- Stay on your current version. Update only once your whole stack has a stable build.
- Brief your staff. Give moderators restart-only access with Subusers. If something changes and nobody owns up to it, check the Audit Logs.
If you’d rather not babysit update day on a home PC, a hosted server keeps running while you sleep. Physgun’s Minecraft server hosting includes Auto Restarts, automated crash recovery and 99.9%+ uptime, which helps when a fresh dimension draws a crowd.
Want A Custom Dimension While You Wait?
You don’t have to wait until 2027 to give players a fourth world. Java Edition supports custom dimensions through data packs.
To add one:
- Create a data pack folder in world/datapacks/.
- Add a dimension file at data/<namespace>/dimension/<name>.json that sets its type and generator.
- Restart the server so the new dimension loads.
- Send players there with
/execute in <namespace>:<name> run tp @s ~ ~ ~.
The Advanced File Manager or the browser-based VSCode Integration makes editing those JSON files much easier than uploading them one by one. On Bedrock, custom dimensions come through add-ons. You can upload them with the Bedrock Add-ons & packs support on Physgun’s Bedrock hosting.
Prefer mods? Dimension mods like The Twilight Forest and The Aether have been fan favorites for years. Check each mod’s page for the Minecraft version it supports, then install it on a Forge, NeoForge or Fabric server. If you’re running a whole modpack, the Modpack Installer picks the right loader and Java version for you.
Getting Your Server Sift-Ready
The Sift is Minecraft’s first new dimension in over 14 years, and it lands in Java and Bedrock in 2027, after the Frozen Caves drop. Play Dungeons II for a preview, but don’t assume every mob or mechanic carries over. For your server, the order is simple: back up now, test on a copy, wait for your plugins, then update. When you’re ready for a Sift-ready world, start your Minecraft server with Physgun and get backups and version switching built right in.
