How To Whitelist Someone On Minecraft

Running a whitelisted Minecraft server is one of the best ways to keep your community tight and your server free of griefers.

Running a whitelisted Minecraft server is one of the best ways to keep your community tight and your server free of griefers. The whitelist works as a gatekeeper, only players whose names have been added can connect, and everyone else gets rejected at the login screen. Whether you’re managing it through in-game chat, the server console, or by editing the whitelist file directly on disk, the process is straightforward once you know where each command goes. This guide covers every method for adding players, removing them, and keeping your whitelist running correctly on a Java Edition server.

How To Whitelist Someone On A Minecraft Server (Whitelist Commands)

How To Enable Whitelisting

Before you can whitelist anyone, you have to make sure your server is whitelist only. To enable whitelists, open up your console or in-game chat and type in the following command:

/whitelist on

You can swap “on” for “off” if you want to disable whitelists. Note that you must have operator status to have the permissions to run any of these commands.

How To Add Someone To The Whitelist

To add a player to the whitelist, server operators can use the following command:

/whitelist add PlayerName

Replace PlayerName with the player’s Minecraft username. Don’t worry about getting them online either, whitelisting doesn’t require anybody to actually be on the server. Once the player is added, they can immediately join your server!

How To Remove Someone From The Whitelist

Removing someone from the whitelist is more or less the same process as adding someone. Just enter the following command:

/whitelist remove PlayerName

Again, replace PlayerName with the player’s username. This will instantly revoke the player’s access to your world.

How to Edit the Whitelist File

Navigate to your server’s root folder and scroll down until you find whitelist.json. Open the file. If you haven’t added anybody to the whitelist yet, it should just look like two brackets.

In between these brackets, add the following line:

{
    "uuid": "",
    "name": ""
}

In the uuid field, add the player’s UUID. We actually have an article on how to find that! In the name field, enter the player’s Minecraft username.

To remove a player from the whitelist file, just delete the entire code block relating to that player, from bracket to bracket.

How To Check For Whitelisted Players (Java Edition)

You can see who’s been whitelisted to your server by using this command:

/whitelist list

This will print a list of the current players who are whitelisted on your server. If you haven’t whitelisted anyone yet, this list will just say “There are no whitelisted players”.

How To Reload the Whitelist Without Restarting

Whitelists should update automatically unless you manually edited the whitelists inside the server files. If this is the case, you can reload your whitelists using the following command:

/whitelist reload

This will refresh the whitelist to make sure it’s up to date with any tweaks you might have made, all without restarting your server.

Whitelist Not Working? How To Fix Common Issues

If your whitelist isn’t working properly, check the following:

  • Is whitelist enabled on your server? Make sure you used the /whitelist on command.

  • Did you enter the correct username? Usernames are case sensitive and require exact spelling.

  • Is your server running with “online-mode=false” in your configuration file? Set it to true.

  • Did the command fail or return an error? Check your console for any errors.

Conclusion

Using a whitelist is one of the easiest ways to control who can access your Minecraft server. Whether you’re adding friends or managing a private community, the built-in whitelist commands make it simple to grant or remove access.

Once it’s set up, your server becomes a secure, invite-only space. No random players, no griefers, just the people you want to play with.
