How to Change Minecraft Server Version

Learn how to upgrade or downgrade your Minecraft server version safely. Step-by-step guide for both Physgun panel users and manual jar file installs.

Switching your Minecraft server to a different version isn’t as straightforward as it sounds. Swap the wrong files in the wrong order and you’re looking at corrupted worlds, failed startups, or a jar file that simply won’t run. Whether you’re upgrading to the latest version or rolling back so your players can connect, the process comes down to replacing your server jar and handling your world files correctly along the way.

With Physgun’s Minecraft server hosting, switching versions takes just a few clicks through the panel’s Server Actions menu — no manual jar swapping required.

Before You Change Versions: What You Need to Know

There are important limitations to be aware of before changing your server version.

Upgrading is generally safe. Later versions of Minecraft rarely remove blocks or items outright, so loading an existing world in a newer version is low-risk in most cases.

Downgrading is dangerous. Rolling a world back to an older version can corrupt it. If your world contains blocks, items, or entities that don’t exist in the earlier version, they will either disappear or cause errors. For example, if your world has honeycomb blocks and you downgrade past the version that added bees, those blocks will be gone.

Before making any version change:

  • Stop your server completely before touching any files.
  • Back up your world folder and any important configuration files.
  • Update your mods or plugins to match the new version after switching — mismatched versions will cause crashes or prevent startup.

Method 1: Change Version Through the Physgun Gamepanel

Physgun makes swapping your Minecraft version quick with just a few clicks.

  1. Log in to your server in the Physgun Gamepanel.

  2. Navigate to Configuration > Server Actions.

  3. Under Install Different Edition, select your desired edition (Vanilla, Paper, Forge, Fabric, etc.) and choose the Minecraft version from the dropdown.

  4. Click Install Different Edition and wait for the reinstall to complete.

  5. Restart your server — you’re done.

Note: If you have mods or plugins installed, update them to match the new version before restarting, or the server may fail to start.

Method 2: Change Version Manually via .jar File

If you are on a VPS or self-hosted setup, you can swap the server jar manually. This works for any server type.

  1. Navigate to your server’s root directory via your file manager or SSH.

  2. Locate your existing server jar (named server.jar by default) and delete it or move it somewhere safe as a backup.

  3. Download the .jar file for the Minecraft version you want. Tools like MCVersions make it easy to find official jars for any version.

  4. Upload the new jar to your server’s root folder. Keep the same filename (server.jar) so your startup command still works. If you rename it, you will need to update your startup parameters to match.

  5. Start the server and allow it to initialize. This may take a few minutes on first launch as it generates updated files.

  6. Once it finishes loading, your server is running the new version.

Troubleshooting

Server won’t start after the version change

  • Check that the jar filename matches what your startup command expects.
  • If using Forge or Fabric, make sure you installed the correct loader version for your new Minecraft version.

World is corrupted or chunks look broken

  • This is most likely caused by downgrading. Restore from your backup and upgrade to the correct version instead.

Players can’t connect

  • Make sure players are running the same Minecraft client version as the server. Mismatched versions will prevent connection.

Mods or plugins crashing on startup

  • Update all mods and plugins to versions compatible with the new server version before launching.
