How To Make A The Isle VOIP Server

Learn how to talk with other dinos in The Isle using the proximity chat plugin. This guide walks you through setting up a Mumble server, installing the plugin on your server, and setting up the client plugin.

The Isle doesn’t have built-in VOIP, so communicating with other players mid-game means finding a workaround. Most players default to Discord, which works for a global chat. Still, a dedicated VOIP server gives you something better: proximity chat that actually matches what’s happening in game, so you hear other dinos near you and not someone on the other side of the map. In a dinosaur game where communication can decide if your group survives or gets picked apart, that difference matters. This guide covers how to set up a The Isle VOIP server, including account setup, linking it to your server, and getting players connected.

Note: As of May 2026, the VOIP plugin only supports Windows servers.

An additional note from the plugin devs: If you are using the bosch island mumble plugin, you have to disable it for this to work.

:byte: Setting Up a Mumble Server for Proximity Chat

Before you can start messing around with the plugin, you need to have a Mumble server set up. To set up a Mumble server:

  1. Visit mumble.info.

  2. Click Download Now and select Windows Server (x64) and Windows Client (x64)

  3. Run the installation wizard for both applications.

  4. Once it’s installed, run your Mumble server.

  5. Next, check the dropdown in your taskbar that shows your background applications.

  6. Right-click on murmur to open the console log and find your SuperUser password.

  7. Open the Mumble Client.

  8. Select Server -> Connect.

  9. Add a new server.

  10. Set the Address to localhost and Username to SuperUser.

  11. You’ll be prompted to enter the password you just found.

  12. Click ok and connect to the server.

  13. Add a channel to your Mumble server and name it Proximity Chat (or anything else really).

  14. Right-click the channel and click Edit.

  15. Assign a password to the channel; it can be anything.

  16. Edit your permissions as necessary. There are no specific permissions needed for this to work, but you may want to set them up to better suit your server.

The next thing you have to do is set up the VOIP Server plugin. To do so:

  1. Visit isle-voip.com.

  2. Click “I’m a Server Owner”.

  3. Download the server plugin.

  4. Open the injector executable file on your PC.

  5. Set the “TheIsleServer Path” to your server’s TheIsle/Binaries/Win64/TheIsleServer-Win64-Shipping.exe file.

  6. Set the channel_name field to the name of the channel you created in your Mumble server and the channel_password to the one you set.

  7. Next, copy the ServerHash printed in your Mumble server’s console and paste it in the server_hash field.

  8. Save your Plugin Settings and boot up your server. Make sure to let it load fully. You should see “Load Map complete” in your console to know it’s fully completed.

  9. Once your server is loaded, click Inject in the injector application.

  10. Let it run until it says “Connected to central WS as server_hash…”

  11. If you don’t want to have to do this all the time, make sure to check the Enable auto inject box.

Now that your server is running the VOIP plugin, players need to be able to connect to it. VOIP has a server plugin and a client plugin. This is how to set up the latter of the two:

  1. Return to the VOIP website linked in the previous section.

  2. Click Download Client Plugin. If you’re on the server page, you should see an “I’m a Player” button to click first.

  3. Run the plugin installer. Make sure to allow the download if your firewall blocks it.

  4. Once it’s installed, open Mumble.

  5. Open Settings -> Plugins and enable the TheIsleProximity plugin.

  6. Click Apply.

  7. Now, connect to the Mumble server your server is using.

  8. You should get a UserHash printed in your console. Copy it.

  9. Next, you need to join your The Isle server.

  10. Open the in-game chat and type “/link-account” followed by your UserHash.

  11. After sending the message, you will be linked to the Mumble Server in-game!

:byte: Conclusion

Setting up a The Isle VOIP server takes a bit more work than simply hopping into a Discord call, but the payoff is huge for immersion and gameplay. Being able to hear nearby dinosaurs instead of every player globally makes group coordination feel far more natural and adds a layer of tension that standard voice chat simply can’t replicate.

Once your Mumble server, server plugin, and client plugin are all configured correctly, proximity chat should work automatically whenever players join and link their accounts. Whether you’re running a hardcore survival server, a roleplay community, or just want better communication during hunts, VOIP can completely change how players experience The Isle.
